B4985 - muslin

Overall, I'm really happy with the fit. The changes I made to the tissue were to do an FBA, and to move the waist. My neck to waist measurement is about 3 inches shorter than the norm. To fix this on the pattern I had to shorten the pieces so that the waist shaping was in the right place, then lengthen it at the bottom the same amount so it didn't end up as a crop-top! Very boring and tedious but I got there in the end. Is there an easier way to do this?
I'm going to go for the puffed sleeves as the drapey sleeves just don't sit right :S I'm also going to add a smidge to the length and to the side seams for a bit more room.
I'm really pleased with the fit, I've finally found the right starting size! I didn't have to make any changes to the upper back or shoulders which is a first! :D
I've already cut the fabric. I cut the collar upside down the first time! Luckily there was plenty left to cut another, this time with the print going the right way! Just got to cut the interfacing out.
I'll be doing a muslin of the Crescent skirt this week too! The sewalong started today and I can't wait to get going.
Now I need some advice. I'm going to end up with three projects on the go - the shirt and two crescent skirts. Any advice for staying organised? I'm thinking of making some really quick tote style bags for each project to keep everything in. These will be useful for future projects too. My main problem is space. We live in a small studio apartment so being able to put a project in a big bag and sliding it under the bed is ideal. Any other ideas?

  1. It looks great (better than some of my finished projects - haha).
The totes would probably work well. Rubber maid makes under bed bins with wheels that are pretty handy (I have two), that might work as well.

  2. Thanks :) Aah, I hadn't thought of those! I think under the bed might need a clear out first though, its not the tidiest! lol I'm also considering those plastic drawers on wheels, with a drawer for each project. I'll have to shop around :)

  3. Looks good!! I think the puff sleeve is definitely the right choice, very pretty.

How do you do your FBA? DO you have a link to the method you use? I've not had much luck with them!!

I'm no help from an organisation point of view - I have a whole room as my sewing space and even then it's often a big mess!!

  4. I use the method from Fit for real people. For this blouse as it is gathered under the bust, the side dart is pivoted into to the gathered section. Like this tutorial:

If you haven't got Fit for real people, I really recommend it! I found it really interesting, even reading through the alterations that I don't need was interesting! I also have to admit, that I haven't mastered the FBA on a darted bodice. I can't seem to get the darts in the right place! lol Gathers are much easier :) I haven't tried an FBA on a princess seamed bodice yet.

  6. Thank you :) Its a tad tight, so when I stitch the cuff bit together I'll have to remember to do it with a 1cm seam allowance to give myself a bit more moving room :)

  7. Your muslin looks perfect, you did an excellent job on the fit! The puffy sleeve does look better than the other one, I can't wait to see the final birdie version :) And about being organised the tote bags strategy is definitely better than letting everything lay around as I do^^

  8. Thank you :) Haha, yeah I got tired of having to leaving projects on the floor, it always gets stood on and pattern pieces get ripped :( However, I have solved the problem now! :) I'm really excited, I'll post pics later!

  9. The muslin looks good. I don't think there is an easier way to make adjustments. It just gets easier and quicker once you know the adjustments you need (without referring to the book all the time).

  10. Thank you :) I think you're right. I can now do an FBA without needing to check a book, which definitely speeds things up! I hope I get faster at the waist adjustment soon :)

  11. Wauw - what a beautiful blouse! The puffed sleeves are the ones to go with!
I always keep my WIPs in a bag, the cut pattern and notes in a pasitc-sheet to keep it all together and not tear it when I pull stuff out of the bag

  12. Thank you! :) The plastic sheet things are a really good idea! Keeps everything together too :)

  13. I'm going to be the lone dissenting voice and say that I actually like the drapy sleeves better, but I'm so behind with commenting that you've probably finished the whole blouse by now!

Really nice fit. All hail the FBA!

  14. It was a tough choice, as I liked them too, but they just weren't sitting right when I moved around :S I might give them a go in a fabric with more drape, I just have to find the right fabric. I haven't finished it all yet, but the sleeves are done :)
Thanks, ooh yes definitely - all hail the FBA! lol

  15. Wow! I really admire anyone with the patience to do a muslin! I'm usually (always) too lazy. I saw your post with the final product too and it looks great!

  16. Thanks :) I'm still not confident in my fitting issues and how to fix them, so a muslin helps with that :)
