Birdie Blouse - Finished!

Of course it was just my luck that as soon as I finished my blouse it clouded over and got super windy and has been that way ever since. Humph. So you get inside photos again. I'm tired today, and aren't wearing much makeup but I thought hey ho, gotta show my face around here sometimes! So here are some photos of me in it :)

Dom set up the camera with a remote control pointer thingy for me! I also used a lens that has auto focus, which made it much easier, even though a few times it focused on the door! Anyway, back to the blouse. I think I could've done with another 1/4 inch or so of an FBA. It's a little snug and doesn't quite go underneath my chest properly. But I'll know for next time I suppose. This is my first garment for my top half after all, I'll get there in the end. I also could have done with pinching a little out of the neckline. It sits a little high and gapes just a smidge. I've written these changes on the pattern piece, so I'll remember next time. I think the construction went really well, there were no serious hiccups which is always nice :) I'm getting better at understanding construction instructions, I think this is partly due to all the blogs I read, the amount of time I spend on the Sewing Forum just browsing (I suggest you join if you haven't already!) and that every time I get a new pattern I read through the instructions even if I don't plan on making it any time soon. So I've been hoarding construction knowledge for a while! :) I'm finally starting to be able to read through the instructions for a garment and actually understand every step! Yay!
Anyway, here are some close ups and some inside shots :)

Yay, I'm so glad it's finished :) I'm really happy with it, and I can't wait to wear it! It brings my total of finished garments to a grand total of 3 skirts and a blouse. Somehow I don't think I'll be participating in Me-Made-June this year! lol
Next up is the Crescent skirt. I'm going to start working on the muslin tomorrow :)

  3. Lovely! FWIW, I wouldn't have noticed the fitting problems had you not pointed them out, and they're only minor (especially compared to RTW, let's face it!)

I'm going to have to go back and find your Beignet photos, however, because for some reason I'd remembered you as having blue eyes. Hum!

  4. Thank you! :) Definitely better than RTW, for one thing I can actually do the buttons up over my chest! lol But yes, only minor and easily fixed next time :)
Nope definitely green with a yellowy brownish ring round the pupil! :) My eye colour is one of my favourite things about myself, though I used to wish for a pair of blue contact lenses. Until I realised how expensive it was to get a decent pair! lol

  5. Ashley, it looks fab and I think the fit is pretty good - perhaps if you adjust the straps on your bra you'd be happier with how it firs under the bust? Personally, I think it fits really well!!

  6. Thank you! :) Adjusting my bra straps is a good idea, pulling em up a bit might help! :) It's a new bra I'm wearing and I haven't gotten round to adjusting the straps properly yet, so you could be right.

  7. Ashley this is lovely. Hello Ashley's face BTW :o)

Was this an easy FBA top? I would love to make a nice blouse like this, but not if the FBA is hard to do.

  8. Thank you :) Haha, yes I'm usually in too much of a hurry to attempt a photo with my face in it. I end up red faced and warm. Not a good look! lol I took my time today and didn't rush :)
The FBA is easy once you know how :) I used this tutorial:
    http://lazystitching.wordpress.com/2010/11/22/full-bust-adjustment-gathered-bodice/
I also used it on the evening gown I made. It's the little things like remembering to rotate the side dart back into the gathers that make it difficult for me. I forget to do things like that, but I'm getting better! The tutorial helps me remember :) Hope it helps!

  10. Oh Ashley, it's gorgeous. I love everything about it - the fabric, pattern and colour. The buttons are fab too.

Can't wait to see what you make next.

  11. Thank you both! :) I use lots of exclamation points too Debi, I don't even realise I've done it most of the time. lol
I'm really pleased with the fit :) Now that I know roughly what I need to do, fitting the next blouse or dress should be made easier :)
After the Crescent skirts, I think it's onto the Russian doll dress so I can try out my tailors hams on pressing a dart! :)

  12. So were you wearing contacts here?!

(Sorry, completely off-topic. I just find the apparent change of eye colour a little disconcerting! It's not something I've ever really considered playing with 'cos I like the colour of my eyes!)

  13. No I'm not, but they do look very blue in that photo! Hmm, perhaps it's because of the colours I'm wearing? Or more makeup in that photo? Some colours bring out the green more I think. I've never had contacts, I just wanted some for a while. I watched someone put their prescription contacts in once and it put me off! lol

  17. Thank you! :) I've yet to test how it stands up to being worn properly though! That'll probably have to wait until Wednesday, as I want to wear it home :)
